Monday May 9, Jr Anglers & Hunters of America (JrAHA) took 50 HISD high school students from Eastwood Academy and Kashmere High schools fishing on Galveston Bay. They caught 225 fish. Wow!
The kids immediately shared their smiles, "whoops and hollers" via phone/camera photos, Facebook listing and tweets with all their friends in real time to those less fortunate who were "indoors".
This outing was a component to the Texas Parks & Wildlife (TPWD) angler education course taught in PE classes and for which the students achieved their "advanced anglers" qualification. JrAHA provides these TPWD courses to inner city high schools and middle schools, and is open to all school districts in Harris county.
The program is in part funded by a grant from TPWD's Community Outreach Outdoors Program (COOP). Matching contributions come from JrAHA. Partners in today's activities include the City of Seabrook who provided a wonderful venue and accessibility, Gainsborough Corporation who provided services for our Mobile Personal Services facility and Shakespeare/Pure Fishing for access to special programs for purchasing fishing gear for teaching fishing.
The angling activities require an army of volunteers to produce the perfect day out fishing. Special thanks goes to the following volunteers who gave a lot of their time and knowledge to make things happen the correct way:
Virginia Clanahan, Carver Walker, John Miller, Mary stiles, Damon Catchins, Mike Martinez, Jerry Weyant, Juan Urbano, Felicia Cesar-White, Brea Walker, Garry Dunham, Marlen Pena and Jeff Akers.
A critical component to this type of event is the partnership with TPWD and Kevin Cunningham the TPWD SE Texas Angler Education Coordinator. Kevin is highly skilled angler and has a passion for working with young people outdoors. He tirelessly makes the program of connecting children to nature work.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT the Wednesday 04 May 2011 Quarterly Meeting of the Members of the Governing Board for the purpose of reviewing past 6 months activities, planning for 2011-12, 2010 IRS Form 990 filing, Fishathon 2011-12, nominating new board members and leadership council members and announcements of other special projects to be proposed and the transaction of such other business as may properly come before the meeting.
