Archery is Magical! It builds self confidence and provides personal achievements in a non contact sport. It is gender neutral and is an alternate sport opportunity for many students not in the major team sports programs.
JrAHA staff and volunteers provide basic Olympic style target archery training as developed by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) and TPWD Texas Archery in the Schools Program (TX-ASP). All instructors are certified by NASP and TPWD’s TX-ASP. NASP has trained over 5,000,000 students since 2003 in school districts through out all 50 states and has maintained a perfect safety record.
Basic training is available through school programs. Additional training, practice formats and tournaments are provided as after school programs with clubs, hosted seminars and special events. The “in school” basic program typically is three-weeks totaling approximately 15 hours per class. Standardized archery equipment is available for these courses.
Each February there is a State Archery Tournament in Waco, Tx hosted by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. In 2011 JrAHA sponsored 30 archers from 5 HISD high schools in that competition through a qualifying event in Janurary.
JrAHA awards a scholarship to a male and female archer annually. See "Scholarship" page for details.
